‘a beautiful Grade I listed building in the heart of historic Plymouth’
We are all individuals with our own individual qualities, personalities and lives. If you want to say farewell to a loved one with a non-religious funeral which is just as special and unique as they were, Devonport Guildhall provides the perfect setting for your ceremony.
We will provide an intimate and beautiful venue for the whole funeral ceremony to take place including the ‘wake’ reception afterwards with a choice of refreshment, cream tea or buffet prepared by our own catering team.
At Devonport Guildhall you will be able to celebrate the life of the person who has died in your own personal way.
The setting for the funeral
The stunning Main Hall is a versatile light airy space where seating can be arranged for 50 to 200 people. With beautiful stained glass windows and high ceilings, there is an historic ambience which is friendly but also impressive.
Whatever your choice of music or tributes we will be able to provide the audio visual support you need including projection of images.
The ‘wake reception’ can be held in the Main Hall or in our Mayor’s Parlour which has a feature fireplace, high ceilings and huge sash windows offering glimpses of the River Tamar.
Planning & conducting of the funeral ceremony
We have our own resident Funeral Celebrant if you do not have someone in mind to conduct the non-religious funeral ceremony.
Wendy Coulton is a professionally qualified funeral celebrant who wants the bereaved to have as much choice as possible about the ceremony style and content.
She can write and present the tribute or eulogy on your behalf or your family and friends can contribute and participate in the ceremony as little or as much as they wish.
Ceremonies can have some or no religious content with music, poetry and readings and they can be held for burial or cremation.
Wendy conducts the ceremony for you and she provides a personalised keepsake copy of the ceremony script.
Catering for the funeral
Our catering will be tailored to your preferences and we do our best to cater for special dietary needs. However, all our food is made in an environment that doesn’t enable us to guarantee the absence of nuts or gluten.
To hold a wake reception at Devonport Guildhall is just £8 per person inclusive of VAT. This includes afternoon-tea, offering a selection of sandwiches and cakes from Column Bakehouse, as well as tea, coffee and fruit juice for every person. The full funeral ceremony is also included.
Devonport Guildhall is fully accessible for our disabled clients. Disabled access can be found at the rear of Devonport Guildhall, with a lift available to access the first floor Main Hall and Mayor’s Parlour.
